To Be an Artist is an idea born out of the desire for collaboration between artists of various disciplines. By combining multiple fields of art, they strive to create the most complete artistic work possible. The synergy of many branches of art appealing to different senses allows for a deeper understanding and experience of the piece.
This idea gave rise to the artistic show “To Be an Artist”, which offers a feast for the senses by creating new arrangements of well-known works by great artists, incorporating various forms of art such as music, poetry, dance, tap, photography, and painting. This initiative attracts many young artists who, through their modern perspective on world-renowned masterpieces, their talent, and their desire to share their sensitivity, provide audiences of all ages with a wealth of emotions, moving moments, and inspiration.
The premiere of the artistic show “To Be an Artist” took place in February 2019 at the Concert Hall of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk. It was inspired by the work and persona of Marek Grechuta. On stage, students from all departments of the Gdańsk Academy of Music—classical, musical, and jazz musicians—performed some of Grechuta’s most beautiful songs, including “Ocalić od zapomnienia” (“Saved from Oblivion”), “Będziesz moją panią” (“You Will Be My Lady”), and “Dni, których nie znamy” (“The Days We Don’t Know”).
Striving to showcase the beauty of sung poetry in the best possible way, the performances were enriched with dance, tap, painting, photography, and even a cabaret scene. The shows presented by the young artists received praise from both the music industry and the residents of Gdańsk.
The most fitting summary of the first “To Be an Artist” performance came from the audience itself:
"Thank you so much for this concert, for the wonderful atmosphere and overflowing energy."
"I’m a great admirer of Marek Grechuta’s work, and I must say that combining his outstanding songs with dance, tap, and photography gave them a whole new dimension—allowing me to rediscover them."
"Congratulations on the concert, I’ll remember it for years."
The second edition of Art2B was inspired by the work of the legendary jazz duo Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Original arrangements of their songs were created by composers and performed by jazz, musical, and classical vocalists and instrumentalists.
The project also featured the BalticAlians Chamber Orchestra—one of the fastest-growing chamber orchestras in the Pomeranian region—as well as Paweł Zagańczyk, a renowned accordionist and lecturer at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, and Cezary Gadzina, an outstanding jazz saxophonist from Belgium. Nearly 50 artists took part in the project, offering the audience not only music but also dance, painting, and animation. Viewers even had the opportunity to participate in the creation of one of the pieces.
Following the success of the first two editions and growing interest in the project, we are excited to begin planning the third edition of the Art2B show. This time, the theme will center on the lives and artistic legacies of female artists of the interwar period, focusing on:
Their love for their homeland, their art, and their tumultuous personal lives inspired us to give the third edition the subtitle:
"They Loved So Deeply" (“One tak kochały”).
